BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS : CLU Loses Control and Game, 78-66
Ron Connors scored 23 points to lead Humboldt State to a 78-66 victory over Cal Lutheran at the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo tournament on Saturday.
The Kingsmen (2-3), who trailed, 36-33, at halftime, stayed with Humboldt through most of the game but fell behind in the final minutes.
“We kept the pressure on them,†said Cal Lutheran assistant Ray Pejada. “But we lost it in the end. Our mistakes toward the end of the game really hurt us. We took a couple bad shots and that was it.â€
Dave Jacques led the Kingsmen with 20 points.
CS San Bernardino 89, The Master’s 85 (OT)--San Bernardino’s Gerald Duncan hit a 25-foot, three-point shot with one second left in regulation to tie the game, and his team outscored The Master’s, 13-9, in overtime of a consolation final in the Redlands tournament.
The Master’s (0-7), which led, 76-73, before Duncan’s dramatic shot, had two late chances to put the game out of reach with one-and-one free throw opportunities, but it missed the front end of both.
Duncan, who scored 20, was followed by Tim Watkins with 18.
The Master’s was led by Rocky Shipes, who scored 38 and had 13 rebounds. Pete Coeler had 18 points.
Moorpark 76, Ventura 69--Moorpark forward David Bussey scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Raiders to the Moorpark tournament title.
Bussey, named the tournament’s MVP, and center David Inemer shut down Ventura at both ends of the court. Inemer finished with 11 rebounds.
The Raiders took a seven-point lead with 12 minutes left in the second half when Andy Jercha hit both free throws of a Ventura bench technical. Bussey then hit four baskets, opening the Raiders’ lead to 14 with 3:49 left in the second half.
L.A. Harbor 70, Valley 53--Jerry Naulls scored 27 for Harbor in the consolation final of the Moorpark tournament. George Powdrill led Valley with 10 points. John Windham, Gary Goodrich, Ron Patterson and Mike Hobbs all contributed eight points for Valley, which converted on 37% of its shots and 69% of its free throws.
COLLEGE WOMEN
Valley 53, Riverside 51--Maryjo Testa hit a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left to lead Valley to the Cypress tournament championship.
Testa’s free throws put Valley ahead, 52-51, and the Monarchs sealed the victory when Dametra Johnson stole the ball and was fouled with three seconds left.
Johnson, a freshman forward, had 16 points and 13 rebounds and was named the tournament’s most valuable player. The win improved Valley’s record to 7-1.
Moorpark 65, San Bernardino 56--Karina Hardman scored 13 points and Julie Renna added 12 off the bench to lead the Raiders to a nonconference victory at Moorpark.
Moorpark (3-5) rebounded for the victory just hours after losing a nonconference game late Friday night at College of the Desert, 78-61. Hardman had 20 points in the loss to Desert.
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS
Crespi 71, Arroyo Grande 42--Senior forward Jason Ringler scored 26 points to give Crespi (1-2) seventh place in the San Luis Obispo tournament. Ken Lynch had seven rebounds, and Matt Turner and Mike Kennedy each had four assists for Crespi. Steve Antonio had 16 points to lead Arroyo Grande.
Bell-Jeff 52, Morro Bay 47--Despite playing without two starters, Bell-Jeff won the consolation championship of the Morro Bay tournament after receiving strong free throw shooting down the stretch.
Bell-Jeff (2-1), which started four sophomores, connected on 16 of 19 attempts from the foul line. Chris Dyer, a sophomore point guard, was named to the all-tournament team.
Mike Dourisboure led the Guards with 18 points. Mike Cefta added 16.
Alemany 77, Saugus 54--Dave Swanson scored 26 points while Bill Lucid added 16 to lead Alemany in third-round action of the Simi Valley tournament.
The win improved Alemany’s record to 3-1. Saugus is 2-1.
Alemany 72, Antelope Valley 41--Jenny Beubis scored 18 points and had seven assists to lead Alemany to the Antelope Valley tournament championship.
Alemany (5-0) trailed at the end of the first quarter, 16-8, but turned the game into a rout by the end of the third quarter with a pressing defense. In the second and third periods, Alemany made 57% of its field goals while Antelope Valley (2-1) made only 18%.
Beubis, a senior guard, and teammate Jennifer Kroll were named to the all-tournament team.
