Fullerton’s Evans Wins Individual Medley for Second Victory at U.S. Swimming Open
ORLANDO, Fla. — Janet Evans, 15, of Fullerton, Calif., posted her second victory of the U.S. Swimming Open Saturday night by taking the 400-meter individual medley.
Evans, who won the 400 freestyle Friday night, had a meet record time of 4:45.81 Saturday night in the individual medley. That bettered the meet record set by Tracy Caulkins three years ago by 1.5 seconds.
Grace Cornelius, a 14-year-old from Newton Square, Pa., continued the youth movement by winning the 100 butterfly in 1:01.52.
Mary Wayte, the Olympic gold medalist in the 200 freestyle in 1984, just missed an American record in that event. The Mercer Island, Wash., resident still broke the meet record set by Heike Freidrich of East Germany with a time of 1:59.46.
