Three pilot whales rescued from Cape Cod beaches where they and more than 50 others stranded themselves last week were losing weight and shedding skin in captivity, raising fears about their prospects for survival. Meanwhile, scientists continued to study the remains of 27 dead whales, hoping to find a clue to why the mysterious and usually fatal ritual occurs. Rescuers pushed 27 other whales back into the sea.
