Sudan Rebel Disproves Death Report
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Sudanese rebel leader John Garang put a definitive end to reports of his death last week when he appeared in the lobby of a hotel here in apparently excellent health.
Sudanese newspapers and the official Sudan News Agency have repeatedly said Garang was killed or seriously wounded in southern Sudan in a shoot-out with one of his lieutenants.
But Garang, commander of the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army, invited reporters to inspect his body for bullet wounds.
It was his first appearance before the press since the death reports started about two months ago.
