The University of Texas began a nationwide search for a football coach to replace the dismissed Fred Akers.
Darrell Royal, former Texas coach, said he will assist in the search but will not interview prospects or have a voice in the decision.
Akers was fired Saturday following a 10-year career in which he posted the third best winning percentage in the Southwest Conference. The Longhorns finished with a 5-6 record this season, their first losing mark in 30 years.
Akers became the first football coach in the school’s 93-year history to be fired.
