Don’t Blame Workers
In the Nov. 2 Letters column, Terry Reiter asserted that employees are partly to blame for the liquidation of Gemco and a takeover attempt on its owner, Lucky Stores, because they insisted on high wages. The fact is, other than a few cents here and there for cost of living--which is gobbled up by inflation and taxation before we even see it--the employees have had no significant raise in 12 years. (That covers four contracts.)
Perhaps Reiter is assuming that the strike of a year ago was an attempt to get more money. Not so. All we wanted was to keep what we already had.
And another thing: Let Asher B. Edelman stay where he belongs--back east. The man is ruthless.
