The Nation : Steel Shipments Protested
Idled steelworkers trying to stop steel shipments blockaded USX Corp. plants in Ohio and Utah, and nearly 90 were arrested, authorities said. In Orem, Utah, 73 protesters were arrested as they tried to stop trucks at the gates of the Geneva Steel Works. In Lorain, Ohio, 14 people were arrested as workers blocked railroad tracks leading from the Lorain Works. There were five people reported injured among police and protesters. The protests were part of a work stoppage that began Aug. 1, idling 22,000 United Steelworkers union members and stopping work at 16 USX plants. The dispute, the longest ever against a U.S. steelmaker, is being called a strike by the firm and a lockout by the union.
