Druze militia leader Walid Jumblatt warned that his forces will back the Shia Muslim Amal militia if Palestinians continue their expansion drive in Lebanon. The warning came as Amal fought hand-to-hand battles with Palestinian guerrillas on the third day of fighting for control of the strategic hilltop village of Maghdousheh, southeast of Sidon. Shells hit the Zahrani oil refinery on the main coastal route south of Sidon and started a huge fire in one tanker. Police said that 131 people have been killed and at least 350 wounded in the Maghdousheh fighting. Syrian-led negotiations to end the violence have been deadlocked.
