Dennis Weaver and Valerie Harper led a group of more than 20 celebrities in launching a holiday food drive to feed hungry people in Los Angeles. “It’s a chance for everyone who has an abundance or even a sufficiency to give to someone who has nothing,” Harper, star of the television series “Valerie,” told reporters. She said food collection bins will be placed at 37 May Co. department stores, 23 Western Electric distributors, 6 Cort Furniture rental stores and at other locations for six weeks, beginning Sunday. Weaver, who appeared in the “McCloud” and “Gunsmoke” TV series, said the group is asking people to donate canned goods and non-perishable items, such as rice and beans.
