Britain brushed off a new Argentine offer for peace talks on the disputed Falkland Islands, saying it will not discuss sovereignty over the disputed South Atlantic territory. The Foreign Office said in London that the proposal “appears to offer us nothing new.” Argentina has offered to approve a permanent cease-fire to replace the truce that ended the 1982 war if Britain would agree to lift its 150-mile military protection zone around the Falklands. Argentine ships and planes have been barred from the zone since Britain recaptured the island from Argentine invaders in 1982.
