The fourth woman to receive an artificial heart was alert and talking with family members a day after the implant surgery. Nicole Christoffersen, 28, of Minot, N.D., the mother of two young sons, received a miniature Jarvik-7 mechanical pump in a 5 1/2-hour operation at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis in a stopgap measure until a human heart donor can be found. Doctors said her condition was critical but stable, normal after such surgery.
