Kolpacoff’s letter is a classic concoction of the stuff from which pipe dreams are made.
Kolpacoff berates the “liberals and radicals” who fill The Times’ Editorial Pages with their “constant carping on a few negatives.” He then proceeds to enlighten us to his extraordinary revelation that “we live in a time of peace and prosperity unprecedented in American history.”
No doubt Kolpacoff feels we liberals own him an apology for attempting to disrupt his uniquely structured little world by tactlessly bringing up such mundane issues as the increasing number of our citizens falling below the poverty level and the ever-widening gap between the haves and have-nots.
To Kolpacoff, such topics as our $230-billion deficit, $2-trillion national debt, $170-billion trade deficit, becoming a debtor nation for the first time since 1913 and becoming the largest debtor nation on earth are of such minor consequence that they are not worthy of serious discussion.
In spite of all of this, Kolpacoff assures us that “these are the future good old days, folks.”
