1 Lotto Player Picks 6 to Win $10.7 Million
California’s Lottery has produced a $10.7-million Lotto winner, but the new millionaire’s identity remained a mystery Sunday as state officials waited for the first ticket holder to beat the 14 million-to-1 odds to come forward to claim the grand prize.
“Somewhere out there in California is someone with a ticket worth $10.7 million,” Ed Bright, a lottery spokesman, said Sunday. “Most likely this individual will be standing at a lottery office when the doors open Monday morning.”
The lottery’s computer system identified a winning ticket Sunday with all six of the numbers selected Saturday in the Lotto 6/49 contest. The numbers were 45-7-5-32-21-12. The bonus number was 13.
The jackpot winner’s identity cannot be officially certified until California Lottery offices open today, Bright said. Once certified, the winner will receive the grand prize in 20 equal annual installments, after 20% is taken off the top in federal taxes, Bright said.
There were no winners in the 5-of-6-plus-bonus-number category, so $860,000 in that pool rolls over into next week’s pot, state lottery officials said.
There were 255 winners in the 5-of-6 numbers category who will receive $1,738 each. Another 10,090 winners in the 4-of-6 category will each get $39, and 181,001 3-of-6 winners will receive $5.
Since the launching of 6/49 Lotto four weeks ago, about 29 million tickets have been sold, and the biggest payoff was for $679,064 for picking five numbers out of six plus a bonus number. Players pay $1 to choose six numbers out of 49.
Lotto games in other states have resulted in several multimillion-dollar jackpots, with the highest yet a $41-million prize in New York. California’s 6/49 Lotto, which draws from a larger population, is expected to produce jackpots as high as $100 million, according to lottery officials.
The California Lottery’s Big Spin game has produced several multimillion-dollar winners. The record prize in that game was a $15.2-million prize last summer.
