Community College Football : Southwestern to Play Riverside for Sole Possession of First Place
Southwestern College can take sole possession of first place in the Mission Conference Saturday with a victory over Riverside. The teams, tied for first, play at Riverside at 7:30 p.m.
Riverside had a one-game lead over Southwestern the last two weeks, but was upset by San Diego Mesa, 35-32, last Saturday. Southwestern’s only loss was last month to Saddleback, 48-31.
The game will feature some of the conference’s best offensive players, including Riverside quarterback Keith Widener. He is 50 of 101 for 1,045 yards and 9 touchdowns. The Apaches counter with Brad Platt, who has completed 123 of 239 passes for 1,723 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Riverside’s Mike Moore leads the conference in rushing with 1,019 yards in 143 carries. Southwestern’s Danny Holmes is third in rushing with 635 yards in 113 carries.
In other key games: Palomar travels to Saddleback in a matchup of teams tied for second place and San Diego Mesa, also tied for second, plays Grossmont at home.
