SEATTLE — Democrat Brock Adams, a former six-term congressman and U.S. transportation secretary, held a slim 51% to 49% lead over Republican Sen. Slade Gorton with 65% of the vote tallied. Gorton, criticized over his handling of the nuclear waste issue, received campaign help from President Reagan in the final days before the election.
