Walsh Gets CCAA Cross-Country Title as CSUN Finishes Third

Dave Walsh and Darcy Arreola led the Cal State Northridge mens and womens cross-country teams to third- and second-place finishes Saturday at the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championships at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Walsh, a sophomore from Canyon High, became the first Northridge runner in 10 years to win the CCAA men’s cross-country title. He ran the five-mile course in 25:10.2 to beat Eddie Toro of Cal Poly Pomona by more than 17 seconds. The CSUN men finished third behind San Luis Obispo and Pomona.
In the women’s race, Arreola, a freshman, ran the 5,000-meter course in 17:43 to finish third. Teammate Nancy Bowman ran a 17:47 to finish fifth. Sylvia Mosqueda of Cal State Los Angeles won in 16:54.
San Luis Obispo, the four-time defending NCAA Division II champion, scored 30 points to win the women’s title. CSUN was second with 46 points, followed by Cal State Los Angeles and Pomona (93).
