Letters : Mountain Lion Attacks at Caspers Wilderness Park

The mountain lion attacks at Caspers Park are regrettable, but closing the park completely is not the answer. Yellowstone Park is not closed because of bear attacks. Actually the greatest risk in visiting Caspers Park is driving there on the Ortega Highway, one of the two most dangerous roads in the state. Accidents on that highway occur weekly, many of them fatal. No one ever thinks of closing it.

There are many sensible alternatives for Caspers. Each park visitor might be given a leaflet calling attention to the dangers of rattlesnakes, poison oak and mountain lions and of the treacherous Ortega Highway. Such a leaflet could give stern warnings against children leaving the camping areas.

Caspers Park is one of the great assets of Orange County. Sensible solutions for its use must be found.
