Rick Magnante of Sherman Oaks has been hired as a scout by the Detroit Tigers. He will also manage the organization’s rookie league affiliate in Bristol, Tenn., next summer. The Bristol franchise is a member of the Appalachian League.
Magnante, 38, spent the past five years working as a scout in the Valley for the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau.
He attended Notre Dame High and UC Santa Barbara before playing minor-league ball in the Cleveland Indians organization.
Gary Walin, George McCarthy and Al Lingua shot a 16-under-par 54 on Thursday to win the team competition at the sixth annual Sparky Anderson-California Lutheran University Celebrity Golf Classic at the Los Robles Greens golf course in Thousand Oaks. Ninety golfers competed in the event with proceeds going to the CLU Baseball Scholarship Fund. Among those playing were broadcasters Don Drysdale, Vince Scully and Ernie Harwell, San Francisco Giants Manager Roger Craig and big-leaguers Cory Snyder, Rick Dempsey and Alan Trammell.
