The Nation : Speed Limit Hike Backed
Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Hanford Dole endorsed efforts to raise the 55-m.p.h. speed limit on rural interstate highways. Dole, making a brief campaign stop in Windsor Locks, Conn., said she thinks states should be allowed to raise the speed limit on rural interstates if it does not create a safety hazard. Lawmakers discussed raising the limit to 65 m.p.h. on rural interstates, but no agreement was reached before Congress adjourned. “I feel that some flexibility is permissible,†Dole said at a news conference with GOP gubernatorial candidate Julie D. Belaga.
