The Three Mile Island Unit 1 nuclear reactor at Middletown, Pa., will be shut down Friday for five months of refueling, refitting and maintenance, plant officials said. Among the systems to be tested and inspected are the reactor’s 3,000 steam generator tubes, which were damaged and then repaired during the six-year shutdown following the March, 1979, accident that crippled Unit 2. Unit 1 was reactivated 13 months ago.
