El Segundo : Balmer to Head Water Panel
Former Mayor E.L. (Les) Balmer has been elected to a two-year term as chairman of the board of directors of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the agency announced Wednesday.
Balmer will succeed E. Thornton Ibbetson, a Long Beach businessman who served the maximum two consecutive terms.
The district sells water to 27 member agencies serving 13 million people in six Southern California counties, including most communities in the South Bay.
Balmer has been on the district board since 1976. He served as an El Segundo city councilman from 1968 to 1972.
