STATISTICAL WATCH : Canyon Moves Onto a Plateau of Its Own

Baker, Fla., was defeated Friday night by Befuniak, Fla., 15-0. With a streak of 42 straight wins, Baker was the only team in the nation other than Canyon with a winning streak 40 games or longer. Canyon extended its streak to 44 wins by defeating Saugus, 40-7.

Passing: The top 10 Southern Section quarterbacks in the Valley are averaging 10.5 completions for 160 yards and 1.25 touchdowns per game, while their City Section counterparts have completed just 6.5 passes per game for 89 yards and 0.6 touchdowns. . . . Joey Speakes of Poly is the top Valley-area passer in the City Section with 723 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Rushing: Although Khalid Ali’s 58 yards rushing against Kennedy last week was his lowest total of the season, it was the most yards one back has gained against the Golden Cougars. . . . Crespi’s Russell White was pulled out of last week’s game early in the third quarter, needing only 17 yards to reach 1,000 after six games. . . . Newbury Park’s Bill Phillips, who had missed two games because of a separated shoulder, returned Friday night against Simi Valley and rushed 23 times for 114 yards and a touchdown.

Scoring: Notre Dame kicker Brian Greenfield’s field goal in the first quarter of his game against Crespi last week accounted for the first points scored against Crespi in the first half this season. After six games, Crespi has outscored its opponents, 125-3, in the first half.

Defense: Sylmar held Grant to no yards passing and minus-44 yards rushing in a 21-6 win. . . . Agoura held Nordhoff to 2 for 6 passing for 6 yards but lost, 18-13. . . . San Fernando held Thousand Oaks to seven yards passing but lost, 14-7. . . . Alemany held Loyola to just four yards passing, but Loyola gained 410 yards on the ground for a 28-6 win.
