Firefighters in Columbus, Ohio, safely burned 600 pounds of rotting dynamite found in a rented storage locker after 1,700 people were evacuated from a one-mile radius that included a giant shopping mall and three large hotels. Three miles of nearby Interstate 70 and several city roads also were closed shortly before experts ignited the dynamite. Authorities had feared an explosion but it did not occur. John Gerrard Reider, 30, formerly of Columbus, was arrested in Kansas City, Mo., on charges of possession of an explosive by a convicted felon and improper storage of explosives.
