JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Convoys of shackled and handcuffed women inmates, escorted by armed guards, were evacuated Thursday from Renz Correctional Center before rising floodwaters could cover the only road into the prison.
The 31 prisoners, considered maximum-security risks, were taken to other state prisons. Other prisoners at the facility had been moved earlier.
“The women inmates are being moved in vans and buses with lead and follow-up vehicles carrying officers armed with shotguns,” said George Lombardi, director of adult institutions for the state.
