PREP FOOTBALL : Western’s Defense Stifles Kennedy in 19-6 Victory

Western High School struck for two quick touchdowns 1:16 apart midway through the third period Friday night en route to a 19-6 victory over Kennedy in Western’s Handel Stadium at Anaheim.
Pioneer quarterback Mike Huy climaxed a 70-yard, 9-play drive when he hit tight end Jorge Ortiz with a 10-yard touchdown pass, giving Western (1-1) a 7-6 lead. On Kennedy’s next series, defensive back Joey Huy intercepted quarterback Todd Bristow’s pass and ran it back 39 yards for a touchdown, increasing Western’s advantage to 14-6 with 5:36 left in the quarter.
Western’s defense dominated Kennedy (0-2) in the second half, allowing the Irish only five total yards. For the game, the Irish finished with 9 yards rushing and 61 yards passing.
In addition to the interception return, Western’s defense also scored a safety on the final play of the third period when defensive end Toby Howell tackled Kennedy quarterback Brett Hepler in the end zone. Western’s David Brown kicked a 28-yard field goal in the final period.
Kennedy’s only points came on a 36-yard first-half interception return by linebacker John Christensen. The conversion kick attempt failed.
