Sutton Sets Record as Newbury Park Wins
The Newbury Park High girls cross-country team, behind the record-setting performance of Melissa Sutton, won the Santa Barbara Lagoon cross-country invitational at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
Sutton, the Southern Section 4-A champion in 1985 and ‘86, ran the three-mile course in 16:59 to win the girls race by nearly two minutes. The effort broke her course record of 17:39, set in 1985.
The Panthers scored 37 points, nine ahead of Anahiem Canyon. Arroyo Grande finished third with 55 points and Dos Pueblos was fourth with 114.
Newbury Park displayed good depth, placing three runners in the top 10. Sophomore Amy Nesbitt finished fourth in 19:40 and Cathy Servern finished 10th in 20:11.
In the boys race, Joe Devine of Saugus finished third in 16:10.
Brett Schultz of Anahiem Canyon won the race in 15:41 and Patrick Reed of Arroyo Grande finished second in 15:54.
