“Them” Against “Oz”

In his essay on why L. Frank Baum came to live in California (“A Man Too Far Ahead of His Time,” July 27), Jerry Griswold could have pointed out that “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” was also a satire on the presidential election of 1896, the campaign between the Free Silverites and the Gold Bugs. Baum was a Populist.
