Week in Review : MAJOR EVENTS, IMAGES AND PEOPLE IN ORANGE COUNTY NEWS : COUNTY : Taxpayers Billed $221 for ‘Dial-a-Porn’ Calls
Beefed-up security in county supervisors’ offices may result in decreased business for a “dial-a-porn†service.
Calls from three of the supervisors’ offices to the same number that plays sexually explicit recordings cost taxpayers $221.50 during the first six months of this year.
County telephone records show that 182 of the calls came from Supervisor Bruce Nestande’s office--many from his private line--six came from Supervisor Roger R. Stanton’s office, and four came from Supervisor Ralph B. Clark’s office.
The supervisors denied making the calls. Many of them, they said, were made on lines easily accessible from a master console in the public lobby, and many were made between 5 p.m. and midnight, after normal working hours.
None of the phones are locked, and “that may be our big mistake,†said one supervisor’s aide.
Supervisors ordered an investigation, including a search of phone records for other county departments.
