BILL WOULD PROVIDE CHP TRAFFIC AID DURING FILM MAKING

SACRAMENTO — The Senate has sent to Gov. George Deukmejian a bill backed by the motion picture industry to require the California Highway Patrol to provide traffic control for motion picture and television filming crews.
The measure won final passage this week on a vote of 23-8. It would require the CHP to establish an “access team” to coordinate traffic, and would allow companies filming in more than one location to apply directly to the CHP for traffic control.
A Senate analysis of the bill said it can be “onerous” for companies to make arrangements themselves with law enforcement to provide crowd and traffic control at film sites.
Under the bill, local law-enforcement agencies would have to coordinate the film supervision activities of their officers through the CHP.
The measure is expected to cost the state about $650,000 yearly.
