A group of Democratic senators called for a renewed FBI investigation of allegations that Chief Justice-designate William H. Rehnquist mishandled a trust fund for his disabled brother-in-law. “We understand that the FBI conducted a limited investigation of this issue, but that a number of fundamental questions remain unanswered,” said the letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.). The brother-in-law, Harold Dickerson Cornell of San Diego, had told The Times that Rehnquist failed for more than 20 years to tell him about a trust fund established to help him financially while he was disabled with multiple sclerosis.
