Fain Surrenders on Parole Violation

SAN JOSE — Convicted killer-rapist William Archie Fain, whose parole was opposed by a petition with 62,500 signatures, has surrendered on a charge of violating regulations requiring sex offenders to register when they change addresses.
Fain’s attorney notified authorities Monday that his client had moved to Mesa, Ariz., but the notification came later than the legal limit of 10 days after the move.
Fain surrendered Tuesday and was released on his own recognizance.
Fain was sentenced to death in 1967 after being convicted of murdering a 17-year-old Stanislaus County youth and committing other crimes, including raping two high school girls.
His sentence was reduced on an appeal to life in prison, and he was paroled in 1983 over objections from Gov. George Deukmejian and a petition with 62,500 signatures.
