A major forest fire that charred 17,000 acres in Boise, Ida., continued to burn out of control, while officials in Oregon prepared to close a fire command center because of the progress being made by thousands of firefighters. In Colorado, cooler temperatures helped fire crews, and a 250-acre timber and grassland fire in the Custer National Forest in eastern Montana was close to being under control after fire crews got an assist from light rainfall and diminishing winds. However, new fires were reported in Washington.
