Argentina’s House of Deputies approved a divorce bill by a vote of 177 to 35, ending 30 hours of debate and sending the controversial measure to the Senate, where opinion on divorce is more closely divided. The bill would allow divorced people to remarry one year after divorce. Grounds for divorce include three years of separation. The divorce issue sparked a rare show of unity between President Raul Alfonsin’s ruling party, Peronist factions and smaller left-wing parties. Argentina, which is officially Roman Catholic, is the largest of half a dozen nations without a law permitting divorce.
