Torrance : Overpass to Be Replaced
The Torrance City Council has voted to replace the knocked-down Magruder School overpass rather than install a traffic signal at 186th Street and Prairie Avenue.
The pedestrian overpass, which a Southern California Edison Co. truck damaged in the spring, was favored by petitioners who collected 1,400 signatures, by more than 200 residents who showed up at Tuesday’s council meeting and by the city’s traffic commission.
Replacement of the overpass was opposed by the city’s transportation, police, engineering and parks and recreation departments, which argued that a signal at the intersection was sufficient.
City Manager Leroy Jackson said that building a new overpass will cost about $100,000, which Edison will pay.
