Former Bruin Tommy Taylor Is Released; The Chargers Still Have 13 Linebackers
Linebacker Tommy Taylor, a fourth-round draft choice, Tuesday became the 12th player cut by San Diego in two days as the Chargers reduced their active roster to 60.
The departure of Taylor, who played at UCLA, left the Chargers with 13 linebackers. They plan to keep seven or eight.
While dropping Taylor, the Chargers moved to add another linebacker with the impending signing of Andy Hawkins, a three-year veteran of the United States Football League.
In other transactions, the Indianapolis Colts cut former USC linebacker Keith Biggers, a free-agent, while the Detroit Lions cut guard Don Greco, who had an injury-prone, six-year career. Greco was a former third-round pick from Western Illinois.
The Atlanta Falcons waived veteran wide receiver Virgil Seay, who spent most of his six-year career at Washington.
Philadelphia cut veteran running backs Major Everett and Herman Hunter, while Miami cut Bill Barnett, a six-year veteran of the Dolphins’ defensive line. The Dolphins also cut rookie quarterback Jeff Wickersham of LSU.
The New York Jets waived second-year running back Cedric Minter, who came from the Canadian Football League. The Jets also cut free-agent punter John Misko, who was trying to win the job from veteran Dave Jennings.
NFL teams must reduce their rosters to 45 players by Sept. 7.
