New Guineans Won’t Rush TV Age

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea — The government pushed new laws through Parliament on Tuesday to prevent the introduction of television into this South Pacific country until January, 1988.
The legislation, which was passed without debate, provides for a penalty of up to $1 million for any person found guilty of operating a television station before that time.
Communications Minister Gabriel Ramoi told Parliament the new legislation will give the government time to form a “clear and logical policy based on the facts.” He said it would be reckless and dangerous to allow the introduction of television without proper guidelines and controls in place.
“We don’t want to be made into Americans or Australians,” he said.
