A brush fire engulfed more than 50 acres in Dogpatch Tuesday evening, raising fears of a massive conflagration of virgin brush if firefighters could not subdue it by morning, said a spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry.
More than 200 firefighters battled the blaze into the night after dusk had forced four air tankers and a helicopter to retreat, said Linda Allen, a fire information officer. Dogpatch is just off California 94 between Potrero and Campo. The fire scene is uninhabited, Allen said.
