A sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a suspected bank robber Monday morning after the man fired a shot at the officer, authorities said.

The shooting took place on 4th Street in Del Mar, where Deputy Steven Owens had stopped Wayne Albert Schraeder because he matched the description of a man who had robbed the Bank of Del Mar in the 1200 block of Camino del Mar at about 11:25 a.m.

Owens, assigned to the department’s Encinitas substation, responded to the reports of the bank robbery and spotted Schraeder turning onto Camino del Mar from 9th Street. He followed Schraeder into the 100 block of 4th Street before pulling him over.

Owens ordered Schraeder out of the car, but after briefly emerging, Schraeder returned to the car and emerged with a handgun, according to Sheriff’s Lt. William Baxter. Schraeder fired one shot at Owens. The shot missed, and Owens returned the fire, hitting Schraeder once in the upper body and twice in the leg.

Owens administered first aid to Schraeder until paramedics arrived to transport him to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. He was later transferred to the trauma care unit at UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was in stable condition Monday night. A handgun and money believed to have been taken in the bank robbery were recovered at the scene of the shooting.

Schraeder, 35, was held under guard at the hospital on charges of attempted murder and armed robbery. A sheriff’s spokesman said Schraeder’s address and occupation were not known.
