Howard Baker Says He’ll Run

WASHINGTON — Former Senate Majority Leader Howard H. Baker Jr. said today that “unless I stumble and fall, I guess I will run for President in 1988.”
The Tennessee Republican told the National Press Club that when he retired from the Senate in January, 1985, President Reagan told him that he would not endorse anyone for the 1988 Republican presidential nomination. Baker said, “It is clear to me that the President wants an open competition.”
