Rebels killed three European volunteer workers and two Nicaraguan officials in an ambush near the Honduran border, and the Sandinista government said it blames the United States for their deaths. Two other Nicaraguans were reported wounded. The killings occurred when the U.S.-supported contras opened fire on two trucks in Jinotega province, 130 miles north of Managua, the government said. A spokesman said a formal protest has been sent to the United States. The European victims were identified as a West German, a Swiss and a Frenchman who recently became a Nicaraguan citizen.
