“Cat Stevens’ Greatest Hits.” A&M.; AAD (analog original). His blend of sometimes biting but usually delicate folkish melodies and vaguely mystical lyrics established this singer/songwriter in the early ‘70s as a somewhat tougher version of Donovan. However, Stevens--whose songs were employed with especially appealing results in the film “Harold and Maude”--eventually abandoned pop as part of his devotion to Islam and his music has pretty much faded from pop consciousness. Yet the best early tunes, like “Wild World” and “Moonshadow,” continue to have a rich, uplifting edge. Sound quality: good.
