The World : Kingdoms Reject Sanctions

Geoffrey Howe, Britain’s foreign secretary who is visiting southern Africa, was told by leaders of the tiny black kingdoms of Swaziland and Lesotho that economic sanctions against South Africa would hurt their people. Both Lesotho and Swaziland depend heavily on South Africa for food, transportation and communications. Lesotho is surrounded by South Africa, and Swaziland nearly so. Their comments supported Britain’s position that sanctions would not end apartheid and would hurt South African blacks and black neighboring states.
