Autry Breaks Hip in Fall Outside Court

Angel owner Gene Autry broke his right hip Thursday when he bumped into someone and fell outside of Orange County Superior Court in Santa Ana.

Autry, 78, was examined and his injury diagnosed at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange by doctors from both the hospital and his baseball team, according to a statement distributed Thursday night at Anaheim Stadium.

Autry was later transferred to St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank.

“Although aggravating by nature, I am happy to report that the injury is not considered serious,” Angel General Manager Mike Port said in the statement. “When I talked to Mr. Autry, he was in very good spirits.”

The accident occurred as Autry was leaving the courthouse, where his lawsuit against the City of Anaheim and a development partnership that includes the Rams is in progress. An Angel spokesman said Autry had observed the court proceedings since 9 a.m.

Autry sued Anaheim in August 1983 to stop development of 68 acres of the Anaheim Stadium parking lot. He contends that his lease with the city includes parking spaces that would be erased by proposed high-rise office and parking structures.

Autry will undergo surgery today and is expected to be hospitalized for about a week.
