Canyon Avenges L.A. Games Loss to Win Hart 7-on-7 Tournament

In the second 7-on-7 football meeting this summer between the teams, Canyon High defeated Hart, 24-12, Saturday in the final of the 16-team Hart tournament.
Canyon quarterback Ken Sollom, who was the tournament’s most valuable player, hit split end Chad Ziegler twice with scoring passes in the final game, the fifth of the day for both teams.
Hart, which defeated Canyon, 7-6, in the L.A. Games last month, beat Bell-Jeff, Westlake, Notre Dame and Antelope Valley to reach the final. Canyon defeated Mater Dei, Newbury Park, Point Loma and Loyola before meeting Hart.
Loyola stretched Canyon to double-overtime before a Sollom-to-Ziegler touchdown pass gave the Cowboys a 20-14 win.
The tournament marked the return of Canyon running back Lance Cross, a two-year starter who had quit football during workouts in May. Cross and Ziegler were the difference in the tournament, according to Hart Coach Rick Scott.
“Ziegler is a big-play man,” Scott said. “In three or four tough situations, they had someone they could go to. And Cross played the whole day.”
Scott said that Hart and Canyon could meet again in as many as three more 7-on-7 tournaments this summer before clashing in the regular-season opener Sept. 12 at College of the Canyons.
