GENESIS & ELP
As a long time fan of Genesis and Peter Gabriel, I find a particular statement in Robert Hilburn’s interview with Gabriel to be patronizing at best and complete speculation at worst (“Peter Gabriel Post-Amnesty,†July 6).
Hilburn says Genesis “is now ridiculed as hopelessly soggy and middlebrow by many of Gabriel’s more demanding fans.â€
As a “demanding fan,†I have found all of Genesis’ albums to be innovative and richly textured. For example, “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway†and “Selling England by the Pound†were a fascinating blend of classical influence with profound, surrealistic lyrics and brilliant musicianship.
It is incomprehensible to me how they could be labeled “middlebrowâ€!
