2 Killed as Striking Cane Cutters Clash With Brazil Police
SAO PAULO, Brazil — Two pickets, including a 17-year-old girl, were shot dead and nine others were injured as striking sugar cane cutters clashed with police near Campinas in Sao Paulo state, a police spokesman said Friday.
He said the clash occurred late Thursday night in the town of Leme when a group of pickets confronted police.
Police first fired in the air to disperse the pickets, and when they refused to leave, the officers shot into the crowd, the spokesman said.
About 6,000 sugar cane cutters have been on strike for the last 18 days in Leme. They want to get paid by area harvested instead of by the weight of the harvest.
