Two murals painted by children on a wall across the street from a neighborhood youth center in San Jose were destroyed by city maintenance crews who were acting on an order to get rid of graffiti on the same wall. “Someone gives them a slip of paper and says, ‘Go paint a wall,’ and they go paint a wall,� said Dr. Jose Colchado, the artist who supervised a crew of 70 youngsters in creating the murals two years ago. And Frank Garcia, city maintenance department supervisor, said he was just following orders. “You couldn’t even tell what they were,� he said. But city officials said they would provide materials to paint a new mural on the wall.
