Mine Roof Collapses; 3 Die

WALTONVILLE, Ill. — A roof collapsed at a Southern Illinois coal mine today, killing three men, a spokesman for the state Department of Mines and Minerals said.
The accident occurred at the Freeman United Coal Co.’s Orient 6 mine near Waltonville in Jefferson County. A United Mine Workers official said he believed those killed were all supervisory personnel. He said no others were believed to be injured.
