Summer Start Set for Construction of Gardena Park

Construction on the city of Carson’s 12-acre Veterans Park is scheduled to begin late this summer, with completion scheduled for the fall of 1987.

The park, at the corner of 223rd Street and Moneta Avenue, designed by Archiplan, Los Angeles-based architectural and urban design firm, will be the final project in a 20-year city master plan adopted in 1969, according to Howard B. Homan, director of the city’s Parks and Recreation Depatment.

The park is expected to cost $4.5 million to $6.5 million and will be both a neighborhood park and a citywide sports and fitness complex.

A 40,000-square-foot two-story fitness center will include a multipurpose gymnasium, a fitness and aerobics center, racquetball courts, a weight room, showers and offices, according to Archiplan project manager Douglas Gardner. POD Inc., a landscape architecture firm, participated in the design process.
