Two boys drowned and a woman who may have been trying to rescue them was in critical condition after the three were pulled from a playground swimming pool in the Boyle Heights area, Los Angeles police said Friday.
Hollenbeck Division detectives said they were investigating the possibilty that the incident may have been drug-related, but they declined to reveal any details of their investigation.
Jesus Leyva, 2, and Juan Rubio, 5, died late Thursday night. The 24-year-old woman, Patricia Gonzales, remained on a life-support system Friday in the cardiac care unit at White Memorial Hospital in East Los Angeles. Gonzales’ relationship to the boys--if any--was not immediately determined.
Officers said the boys and the woman apparently entered the pool through a hole someone had cut in the fence.
